This is a time line about the creation of German expressionism to its integration into American movies

Character design
This is my German Expressionism inspired character. It is obviously inspired by Nosferatu but with slight variations, and a different personality/killing style. For one unlike Nosferatu he is more human shaped and proportioned like Dr Caligari and like him he does not look outwardly threatening or creepy instead looks strange yet defenceless which he uses to lure in people who would take advantage of someone like this to the feed on them.

German Sandcastle
This is my attempt to combine a German Expressionist like look and a common sandcastle, to create a sandcastle that, while not the best example of them, incorporates common German expressionist themes such as having a warped or broken look as well as strangely proportioned and looking like complete shadow, though in most media I have seen the shadows do not come from one specific place and even if they do it is greatly imagined and unrealistic for what it is.

Artists interpritation
I have decided to do an interpretation of the dark castle drawn by Roberto Gatto from Artstaion.
Though I don't think I've done a good job as I wasn't able to grasp how he used his brush strokes to make the colours faded yet solid enough that a single stroke wont work.

Final design
For my final design I decided to develop this one further
To develop this design I started with blocking out all of the pieces with solid colours(black, white, grey) then making any changes, such as the floating blob into an air balloon and the square shape on the ground into a news stand.

Presentation evaluation
In my opinion I think that my presentation to the class for my research presentation went very well mostly because I feel I was mostly well prepared for it, with a good presentation and responses for questions. Though if I could do anything better it would have been the length as well as my own presenting attitude. As a result of this I believe I have kept my blog up to date in a good way, which is good since it helped me keep track of my work and remind me what my future plans were.
___________________________________________________________________________
My work was inspired by two German expressionist movies, the fear of the unknown from Nosferatu and the overall look and aesthetics from Dr Caligiri, as well the the strict use of mostly solid black, and grey background from the game Limbo.
References for my final work include shop shutters and hot air balloons though this was researching how to properly draw them.
For the mystery man, who travels from the left building windows to the blue window down into the red news stand, he was subconsciously influenced by a character from the Persona series named Igor, as well as the news video of mystery Angel save man from deadly car crash, though unintentionally.
This is a reference on the movement of a balloon
This is my final animation that I have adjusted, I have made some changes to the unfinished piece seen below, one change obviously includes the hot air balloon which looks much less 2D and blends with the surrounding settings much more fluidly. Something I have to mention from the idea presentation of the mystery man and the blue/red lights, which both happened to develop as I was experimenting with ideas with my teacher, though I came up with the encroaching light as well as the man coming into the foreground. The fog was also added post planning stages to make the foreground look more interesting.

Evaluation
At the beginning of my project I juggled around a myriad of ideas which ended up mostly consisting of city environments, since I used a method of silhouette where you use the pen tool to make a shape and then fill it in, as well as forests and a bridge, in my eyes, but these influenced my decision to make a city landscape. So after I made a bunch of ideas I picked the design that most looked like a city and started from there.
I decided to have my environment compose mostly of distorted buildings, windows and other street type items from the work of German Expressionist movie Dr Calligiri, which opened up my mind to different techniques to capture the distorted look, I did this by thinking in terms of a strange point of view. Another skill I developed working on this is the fog and the sky. I did research mostly to see how light would work on certain objects, such as the shutters, though I also researched the look and behaviour of air balloons which gives the animation the majority of it's movement as well as being the cut off point to when the animation ends.
I learned a large portion of these skills through either trial and error or getting assistance from my teacher, without which I doubt my animation would look half as good as the end product and as a result I am very proud and satisfied with the end product both in terms of my 2D drawing skills and final animation since it not only looks eerie but fluent. Though if I could do it again I would have their be more frames in between to make the animation flow better.
However as I said I am proud of the final piece and think the best part is the small detail of the man travelling from building to building.
