Level 3 project 1 concept art

Artist Jen Zee

The concept artist that I have chosen to focus on is Jen Zee who has done work on the game Transistor

The colours he has used are mainly blue, red, orange, yellow, brown and green. The focal point is the characters sword with its sharp glowing effect and piercing blue radiant light effect, though the thing you see first is the characters face, covered in shadow lit up only by the glow of her sword showing her fierce eyes. The image is depicting a woman with a weapon in the foreground of what looks to be a lively city as the lights are on. The atmosphere is that of a woman all alone with determination to achieve her goal in an environment that looks dark and unforgiving. To me the meaning of this concept art is a woman on a one man stand against what she thinks is wrong.

My peers have reviewed my example and have noted how the first thing you notice is the sword and how the sword is the focal point which I agree with, they also noted how the art looks bright an digital mainly pointing to the design on the sword as well as some aspects of the background. One thing I do not agree with is someone comparing the art style to Tron which I think is false as it gives of both a Sci-Fi feeling as well as a Fantasy vibe, while Tron is primarily Sci-Fi

Rule of three grid

The artist Jen Zee has used the rule of three grid very subtly in places like the face which while not directly on the face is still close enough to give the effect and draw attention as well as other points like the sword and its glow, which in my opinion also happens to act as the focal point and the main area of action. The biggest form in the image is the character herself as well as her weapon.

These are my own attempt to draw an environment setting with the Rule Of Three grid

Golden Spiral

The Golden Spiral is a mathematical equation and shape used to draw a focal point.

The following images are my attempts to see if artists use the Golden Spiral or the Rule Of Three grid

To me the focal point is in line with the spiral rather than the grid

The focal point is in line with both the grid and spiral in my eyes

The focal point is in line with both the grid and spiral in my eyes

The focal point is more in line with the spiral

The focal point is with the spiral

The following are my first attempts at using the golden spiral method to draw a dessert, seaside and Forrest environment

This is my dessert environment the focal point of which is the camel

This is the forrest the focal point being the top of the waterfall. Though I feel this is my worst one

This is my seaside environment the focal point is the survivor on the raft

Leading light

Here are a few environment concept arts that have used leading light that I have highlighted

Leading lights and lines are lines along pieces in the art that subconsciously lead the viewer to look at the images focal point

Developed
This is the environmental concept art that I have chosen to develop along with rough colour plans.

I have also highlighted the Dominant/ Sub Dominant and Subordinate form as well as the leading light

So far I have added a flat colour scheme to identify my colours and where they are placed

This lesson I have created an image that follows the golden spiral theme along with a good attempt at leading light and lines towards the focus point. The theme for this piece is a man who crashed on an island while trying to prove that steamboats are still useful though it wasn't really influenced by anything though it does remind me of movies and TV shows that feature boat wrecks. I created my design in Photoshop which I think was a very suitable software for my work as I had to use a lot of blending and colour overlapping design techniques which I think positively affected my design and made it look much better. I would hope that this design manipulates my viewer into feeling sorry for this man yet curious as to where he is, though this could have worked better had I not included that shack to make the Island seem deserted. My work on it today has vastly improved my work and made it look more realistic, and as I said if I could do anything differently I would have not included the shack to make the survivors situation seem more dire.

Perspective
These are three buildings I drew with the rule of perspective and Horizon line
This is my attempt at using the horizon line to draw a car and a billboard using the horizontal line and I think it has worked quite well

This is an experiment and practice of 2 point perspective

This is a practice of drawing a 1 point perspective and different techniques including the floor at the top

This is practice for the 3 point perspective which didn't work well at first

2 Point Perspective

These three are my attempt at drawing using a 2 point perspective method to make models(in order)Building, Space Ship and Gas Station

This lesson I have created a thumbnail drawn in a 2 point and 3 point perspective in an attempt to use a mixture of Vertical and Orthogonal lines to do so. Because of the perspective the 3 point perspective can be used to a dramatic effect while the 2 point perspective can be used for an ominous or creepy effect. I did all of this in Photoshop which I think was the best program to use to properly use perspective techniques, which remind me of leading line and focal point. By using this technique I have learned ways to make better use of my perspectives, which means that my focal and entry point will be pointed out more clearly. To use this technique more effectively I could have made use of the vanishing point to make more dynamic looking designs and if I had been able to use colour I think it could have gotten across better. My work with 2 point perspective is much better and more polished than with 1 point perspective and if I could have done something differently it would be to make the images more dynamic and eye catching.

Mini project

Mini Project silhouettes

These are silhouettes that I have created as a prelude to my final work. The plot for my project is a forest that has gained enough sentience to attack dangers trying to chop down its trees, similar to Poison Ivy from DC Comics

This is a three point perspective where the focal point is the tree coming out of the top of the building

This is a one point perspective design where the focal point is the trees coming out of the building, the dominant form is the building, the sub dominant form is the tree to the right and the subordinate form is the trees coming out of the windows.

This is a two point perspective drawing where I tried to make the focus the tree, there are also other props strewn around such as the car with a blade and the claw in the bottom right of the screen, the focal point is the tree specifically where the damage is such as the cuts and the claw marks.
This is a 1 point perspective of the tree taking a human hostage from the research facility that have been creating and sending out the machines that are killing trees. Here I have used the golden spiral and the effect that people naturally focus on other humans in art to make the person the focal point.

This is my second attempt at a two point perspective the subject being that it is a prequel to the fist two point drawing using the same techniques though this time the focal point is the claw carrying trees rather than the blade.

This is my attempt at using the fence method of perspective drawing with a lot of  trees making a path to the middle which is meant to be an enormous tree the focal point in this drawing is the tree top.

Final
This is a more developed version that I have chosen to make my final, the story here is that the tree guardian has gone to the headquarters of the company that is cutting down their trees to destroy it. I chose this because the 3 point perspective gives my drawing a sense of tension and drama that could be associated with this backstory.

This is another more developed version of a previous work that I considered for my final piece the story being that the tree defended itself while about to be cut down.

This is the evolution of my final work, the green vines and the grey building were made with monochromatic colours, other things I have done is the light blue windows and the tree coming out of the top which I have made progressively more tree like

The backstory here is that this corporation has become so large that after realising what killing all of the tree is doing to the environment they used their wealth to build a building tall enough to escape the polluted waters and the poisonous air. My inspiration was a picture of the galaxy taken in space

This is my final work with more defined shadows
